Rehabilitated from an adult care facility to a home for a family of five, the Golden House—by Seattle-based SHED Architecture & Design and contractor Ambrose Construction—features an updated open floor plan that prioritizes views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula.
Driven by the client’s desire to have a central location for their record collection, the design team incorporated a rift-sawn white oak cabinet surrounding the couch in the living room. Hidden away on the right side of the L-shaped unit, the custom cabinet is divided into two main sections, one for record storage and one for DJ equipment. The storage is set up similar to how it would be in a music store, where records face the user and can be easily flipped through. The second section is where the turntable lives.
The top edges of the station and the “shelves,” or movable finished tops, are rabbeted so they can be slid over to conceal either the records or the vinyl player. Plus, underneath the equipment, a removable panel allows access to electrical power and ensures all cords are cleanly handled out of view.
